Summer Programs For
tweens/teens/young adults

All Young Adult summer programs are sponsored by the Bohlsen Foundation
PLEASE NOTE: The library will be using a new online program registration system beginning May 1, 2009. You will need your library card to register for all programs whether online or at the Reference Desk.
Summer Volunteer Opportunities
The library needs responsible volunteers for several programs this summer. The amount of time varies with each program. Registration begins May 1 and continues throughout May, until all of the slots are taken. This is the only time we register volunteers for the summer. Volunteers will receive their schedules and instructions in the mail in June. Please register at the Reference Desk.
√Those entering grades 7-12 can register to help in the Children’s Room to help with for one to two hours at various craft programs throughout the summer. The total hours will be approximately 6-8 hours for the summer.
√Those entering grades 7-12 can register to become Book Buddies, by choosing books and listening to children read to them. You may register for one or two series (Wed., July 8, 15 & 22, from 6:15-7:15 p.m. OR Fri., August 7, 14 & 21, from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.). This program will require a short orientation meeting, about which you will be notified in June.
√Those who are 14 years old + can register to be Summer Reading Club Listeners, requiring you to work several hours per week throughout the summer.
Teen Advisory Board Meeting (TAB) EIY706
Tuesday June 2, from 7-8 p.m. Grades 7-12
Summer’s just around the corner! Time to relax, take a vacation and of course read! Come and share your favorite beach reads with your fellow teens so everyone will be ready for the summer. Find out about the teen Summer Reading Club and all the terrific summer programs for teens available at your library. The TAB will not be meeting in July and August and will resume in September. So join us for some delicious punch and snacks, a raffle for an adorable beach bag filled with all the necessities for a day at the beach and then some DDR dancing. Bring a friend and have some fun!
Teen Summer Reading Club
Registration begins on June 15 for those going into grades 6-12
Love to read? Why not get rewarded for it and join our summer reading club. The more you read, the more you win! You may begin submitting completed reading logs on June 29. This program ends on August 21.
Young Adult Photography Contest
Submission deadline: Thursday, July 23 by 9pm Entering grades 7-12
Join our first ever amateur YA photography contest. The first place winner will have their work permanently displayed in the Teen Bistro. See the Adult Reference Desk for entry forms and details.
Getting Ready to Babysit
Saturday, June 20, 10:00am-1:00pm Entering grades 6-8
Fee: $10 check payable to the East Islip Library upon registration at the Reference Desk.
Learn the necessary skills to become a responsible babysitter.
Battle of the Books EIY720
Tuesday, June 30, 7:00-8:00pm Entering grades 6-9
The library is looking for excellent readers who would like to compete in the year’s Battle of the Books. If you like to read and have a good memory, you will enjoy the competition. You must be available for practices throughout the summer and for the competition on Saturday, August 15. If there are more than six competitors, we will have a runoff to determine what six players will go to the competition.

New York Safe Boating Class
Mon, July 6 (6-9pm), Tues, July 7 (6-9pm) & Wed, July 8 (7-9pm)
Ages 10+ Fee: $20 for ages 10-17, $30 for ages 18 and older
Upon completion of this 8-hour class and passing the written exam, students will be able to operate Jet Ski’s and personal watercraft. Checks, payable to Rich Cloonan, will be collected upon registration at the Reference Desk.

Learn the history of this favorite snack and then learn how to make authentic Bavarian style pretzels from scratch that you can take home to bake. Flavors include garlic, traditional salt and cinnamon-sugar.
Skateboard Wall Art EIY707

Look at the current trends in skateboard art and use these themes to create
your own skateboard shaped wall art.
Design Your Own Lamp EIY708

Use your creativity to design a colorful lampshade that will be fastened to a pre-wired lamp.
Time for Tie Dye EIY710

Learn how to recycle an old shirt or dye a new one! Please bring a white or light colored shirt, the more worn the better. Shirts should be 100% cotton or 50% cotton and 50% polyester and new shirts should be washed for best results.
Wacky World of Instruments EIY713

Learn new ways to make musical sounds with a collection of instruments. You’ll then make an instrument of your own using common household items.
Printmaking Workshop EIY717

Learn the basics of printmaking, from woodcuts to metal plates. Then apply the techniques to your very own print.
Creativity in Motion EIY718

Calling all actors! Attend these dramatic workshops and learn the art of improv, hone your acting skills, perfect your deliverance of monologues and even work on a bit of writing. This program has open enrollment; you may attend any or all of the above dates.

Learn how to pedicure, decorate and care for your feet. Everyone will get their own kit that includes: foot basin, emery board, pumice block, orangewood stick, nail polish and nail decorations. There is a $7 kit fee to be paid in cash the night of the program.
