Reading E-Books in Your Web Browser

Most devices (computers, tablets, phones) with a modern Web browser can check out e-books from the library in the new Overdrive Read format. Overdrive Read allows you to read eBooks directly from a browser rather than downloading them. This allows for a faster, less complicated checkout process for most Live-brary titles.

Some early Kindle Fire devices will not work with Overdrive Read with their standard Web browser. If you have the original Kindle Fire model, you will need to install an alternative web browser as outlined in steps 1-4. Users with other devices can skip the first four steps.

1. Visit the Kindle Fire Appstore. (1st Generation Kindle Fire only, otherwise go to Step 5.)

2. Search Browser for Kindle Fire and search for Maxthon Mobile. (Note: there are other apps available, this is a highly rated free app, but other apps will work the same.)

3. Tap “Free” and “Get App.”

4. The app should appear in the App section of your Kindle Fire. Tap it to download

5. Using the web browser on your device, go to eipl.org and then select Live-brary Free Downloads

6. Search for a title. Titles with a black icon in the upper left hand corner can be checked out immediately. Titles with a grayed-out icon have to be put on hold.

7. Tap desired book cover.

8. Tap Borrow.

9. Enter library information and card number. First time users, should click on “Settings” on the right hand side to set their default lending options.

10. Tap Borrow.

11. Tap Go to Bookshelf.

12. Tap Read (in your browser).

13. The e-book will display in the new tab.

14. Setting a bookmark or favorite in the browser will allow you to find and read the book when offline. (In Maxthon, click on the arrow to the left of the address bar.)
